National Digital Strategy
ODW Director Loren Fantin joined leaders from the National Library of the Netherlands, Library & Archives Canada and others at the Canadian National Heritage Digitization Strategy Foundational Assembly in October, to discuss the global digital collaboration strategies and to strike a National Steering Committee to guide Canada in implementing a much-needed national digital strategy.
Digital Curation & Microfiche
Presenting at the 2016 OCUL Digital Curation Summit, Art Rhyno highlighted his cutting edge approaches to digitizing microfilm and fiche, using photographic technology. Universities in particular are enthusiastic about digitizing newspaper collections, but the results from microfiche often are more disastrous than progressive as we move from analogue to digital. Cultural Heritage & Social Change
November saw the first Summit on Cultural Heritage and Social Change in New Orleans and ODW was there! The unconference brought together representatives from across the GLAM sector to discuss the creation and implementation of policy and strategies to support social change, empower local communities and build cultural equity.
Transcribing Canada’s Heritage
The successful pilot project with LAC using ODW’s transcription tools for the Coltman Report harnessed volunteers from across provincial and global borders, and the energetic response suggests that crowd-sourced transcription can be applied to many collections, large and small, in the future. Indigenous Cultural Rights & Digitization
Practicum student, Mark Fellin from the UToronto iSchool, is researching indigenous cultural rights for digital collections and examining how our tools can be more inclusive for indigenous communities as their cultural and heritage objects and collections are digitized and made accessible online.
